This short film was a collaboration with artist Lauren Kalman as part of the Kresge Artist Fellows portrait series produced by Donald Harrison. Lauren and I developed the concept around key themes in this body of work which she calls “To Have and to Hold.” Derived from traditional wedding vows, this series of her work explores embodied responses to loss of control and the desire for human connection. In this work she carefully forms the vessels over several days and then imprints them with her body leaving a permanent distortion of the vessel's original form and a lasting impression of the absent body. The film reflects this process of duration of formation and the persistence of loss. It continues today in various venues around Detroit. The semi-nomadic microcinema screens experimental and avant-garde film, video, and animation. Acting as co-directors, co-curators, and projectionists, we highlight the work of local filmmakers as well as visiting filmmakers through screenings and workshops. For many years, Mothlight ran a filmmaker-in-residence program, partnering with cross-border organizations such as Mobile Frames and Media City Film Festival in Windsor, Ontario. We have been community sponsors at the Ann Arbor Film festival for several years and have collaborated with the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and the Film-makers’ Cooperative to present Projection Instructions, a 16mm multiple projection performance in January 2015.
